Promoted by: | Brighton Early Music Festival |
Time: | Friday, 8 October 2004, at 8:00pm |
Place: | St George’s Church, Brighton |
Description: | Deborah Roberts, soprano; Tessa Bonner, soprano; Catherine King, mezzo soprano; Caroline Trevor, alto; Frances Kelly, harp; David Miller, chitarrone; Nicholas Parle, organ Erotic madrigals from Monteverdi's 4th book of madrigals were miraculously transformed into sacred pieces by the substitution of Latin texts, for performances by nuns. These will be combined with music actually composed by and for nuns of Lombardy including the recently discovered genius Chiara Margarita Cozzolani. A perfect complement to I Fagiolini's "The Full Monteverdi" programme the night before. Spot some of the same erotic madrigals, this time in the guise of "sacred clothing". Hear some of the extraordinary music that cloistered nuns were composing despite numerous attempts by the church to curb their activities! Musica Secreta brings together some of the finest solo and ensemble singers and continuo players in the world. They have pioneered much research into music composed and performed by women and released several award winning CDs. This concert is being recorded for broadcast on BBC Radio 3's The Early Music Show. |
